Northern Michigan is quickly becoming known as having the best wineries and breweries in the country! However, many people that visit this beautiful area are not interested in visiting them. So, what is my suggestion? Visit the amazing coffee shops and other attractions that these beautiful cities have to offer.
This is the first post in a series that will focus on some of the must see cities in northern Michigan; to kick it off, we are going to start in my hometown of Petoskey!
The Coffee Shops:
Dripworks- Located on cozy Howard street, this little third wave coffee bar is safe from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Petoskey. Serving much more than just coffee, the friendly atmosphere and baked goods of Dripworks is the perfect escape from the busyness of everyday life.
(Dripworks is closed in the winter and re-opens in the spring!)

North Perk - Also located on Howard street, this innovative coffee shop offers a unique experience for each customer. This location is more towards the center of town and has the tendency to get very busy during the summer months, but balances out the hectic rush with a welcoming interior, great music, and the option to buy coffee beans (hand roasted by the owners)! If you find yourself in East Jordan or Boyne City, check out their other locations!

Roast and Toast- If you're looking to stay in the center of town, then this is the place for you. Located on bustling Lake Street, this coffee shop offers a variety of food options, great coffee, and an incredibly unique atmosphere. With twenty years of fantastic service under their belt, this little shop continues to grow in recognition all over Northern Michigan.

The Beaches:
Magnus Park - This beach features rocks instead of sand, with flat rocks stretching out into the water. This unique geography makes this a great spot for kids to come and swim (both because of the lack of sandy mess and because of how easy it is to walk). The only recommendation would be to bring water shoes, and a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of their waterside tables, or up in the grass!
The Breakwall - Locals love this spot. While it is not necessarily a beach, you will be able to see people jumping off of both sides into the water and climbing back up the ladders to do it all again. On summer days, this place is perfect for swimming, during the fall it gives a panoramic view of the changing colors, and over the winter months beautiful ice formations can be seen, that have been created by the crashing waves. This attraction is located just outside of downtown Petoskey, on the waterfront of Little Traverse Bay.
Petoskey State Park - This is one of the most popular beaches to swim at, both for locals and tourists! You will need a state park sticker to enter and these can be purchased at the entrance; trust me, it is well worth it! The beaches stretch a sizable distance along the shoreline of Little Traverse Bay, and also feature famous sand dunes that can offer an afternoon of excitement.
Other Things to Do:
One of my absolute favorite things to do, when I visit home, is to go for a walk on the Little Traverse Wheel Way (an extensive and paved walk way), as well as the Bear River Trail (this one is a bit more rough and extends about a mile). There are also plenty of shops that are open year round and have a little something for everyone! Finally, we cannot forget the great restaurants that Petoskey has to offer; for more information on those you can check out https://www.petoskeyarea.com/area-tastes/restaurants/!
If you decide to visit Petoskey, let me know; I would love to hear about what you did!
