Is It Okay to Let Go of Goals?

Today, I was scrolling through Pinterest and one of those “self-care tips list” caught my eye. As I was reading through the inspiring ideas, one stood out in particular; “let go of one goal.” For a minute, I was a bit shocked; I had never heard that it was okay to let go of goals.

Then, it hit me. Our society tells us to reach for the stars, to pursue our dreams, and let nothing stand in our way, but what if our big ideas no longer fit with the path we chose to follow or what if they weren’t achievable in the first place?

So, as I sat there a bit offended that this article thought I couldn’t achieve all of the goals that I had for myself, I began to felt the freedom of being given permission to weed out the ideas that were sitting there and taking up space for new ones that I actually wanted to achieve.

After coming to this realization I decided that YES it is okay to let go of goals.

Here are a couple ideas in how to decide if your dreams are still working for you, or hindering you, and how you can let them go without feeling like a disappointment:

1. Does the goal make sense anymore?

2. Is this goal causing you unnecessary stress (ask someone close to you if you don’t know)?

3. Does the goal get you to where you want to be?

If the answer to any of these made you second guess yourself, then it is okay for you to let things go. Remember, your goals are personal to you and you alone; they're not for gaining the approval of others.

There’s so much more out there than having to achieve every thought that you set your mind to, and when you clear space for new ideas, I know you’ll be surprised at what comes your way.
